"Arts of war become arts of peace" ("heiho wa heiho nari")
Iizasa Choisai Ienao (1387-1488)
Iizasa is noted for saying " heiho wa heiho nari. " It is a play on words. The first heiho can also be read hyoho ; it means the military methods. The second heiho is written with the characters for peaceful methods. Thus, Iizasa was saying that the warrior arts should be arts for peace. This refers to a long-held belief among many martial arts masters, or bugeisha , that the highest level of expertise was in being able to win without fighting (arawazu ni katsu). When you understand this, you will have begun to understand the principle of "karate ni sente nashi (there is no first strike/attack in karate" by Master Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957).
Courses ('gasshuku') are designed to be fun, at the same time as reinforcing the deeper aspects of the martial arts - true budo principles.
You will certainly be involved in technical training...but this is only half the story. The other half of the weekend is a social affair. Sight-seeing, tourism etc. as a group helps to build rapport/friendship between individuals.
