Gaia Course 2011 - International

Outline of Event: Weekend residential training course on the brilliant sands of Gaia beach, organised by the Associacao de Karate-do de Gaia (AKG) under the guidance of Mr Bruno Santos, the chief instructor of AKG.
 
Limited to:

ADULTS

'Low budget' applications:

  • Unwaged karateka will be given preference, on a first come first served basis.
  • Up to 8 adults can stay with AKG students, at no cost.

'Standard budget' applications:

  • Places on the course will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Partners and family members may accompany the karateka but will be expected to pay the same rate as the karateka.

 

CHILDREN

'Low budget' applications:

  • 1 Child karateka + 1 guardian per application
  • Unwaged families will be given preference, on a first come first served basis.
  • Up to 8 such child/guardian pairs can stay in the dojo (wooden floor) at no cost.

'Standard budget' applications:

  • At least 1 guardian must accompany every child karateka.
  • Places on the course will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Parents and family members may accompany the karateka but will be expected to pay the same rate as the karateka.
 
Suitable for: All grades/skill levels.
All ages from 7 upwards.
Child applicants may be considered on two conditions:
1) They are accompanied by a responsible adult (e.g. parent or teacher acting in loco parentis).
2) They have a letter of recommendation from their sensei or principal teacher.

Guests, partners, family are welcome at this event. They do not take part in the training, of course, but are welcome to take part in the social side of the event. The fee, however, remains the same per person.

 
Training Details: Training will be on the golden sandy Gaia beach and in the water. If the weather is poor, training will be in the AKG dojo.
 
Accommodation:

Low budget: in the dojo (wooden floor)

 

Standard budget: at a nearby hotel, arranged by the host organisation (AKG)

 
What to bring:
  • Sleeping bag and/or quilt + pillows if you are sleeping in the dojo
  • Karate-gi (preferably two, if you have them)
  • Bo and jo (if you have them)
  • Tabi (optional)
  • Appropriate change of clothing (if we train in the water)
  • Sunblock
  • Hats
  • Evening wear (for the course dinner). Dress code is 'smart casual'.
  • Towels.
  • Personal hygiene items (e.g. toothbrush, paste, soap, shaving items etc.)
  • Anything else you would like to take on a trip to Portugal!!
 
Cost & Deadlines:

All deadlines will be strictly adhered to, without exception. The prices listed below are residential rates. If a person wishes to participate on a non-residential basis, the cost will be 20% less. Non-residential means "no bed/meals".

 

Level 1 Package holder = Standard training only (i.e. courses paid for separately)
Level 2 Package holder = Level 1 + UK courses, if booked by the package deadline*
Level 3 Package holder = Level 2 + European courses, if booked by package deadline*


* Courses are filled on a first come, first served basis. So even if a person is on a package, if they delay, they may not get a place (i.e. if the course is completely full)

The prices listed above includes the following:

  • Accommodation (Friday night and Saturday night) in Gaia/Porto
  • Training for the weekend (inc. tuition, hall hire, equipment costs).

 

The prices listed above do NOT include the following:

  • Flights and other travel to/from/within Gaia
  • Consumption of alchohol at any stage during the course
  • Grading fee (if applicable).

  • Other subsistence


Chief instructors may attend as the guests of the gasshuku (i.e. free). All we humbly ask is that they share their knowledge and skill by teaching at least one session during the weekend.
